Have you lost one or more teeth? Or are you facing the loss of some teeth? Dental implants offer many benefits. In terms of the beauty, function, and health of your teeth, they are best replacement option. If you are considering tooth replacement options, dental implants will do more to restore the health and beauty of your smile than any other choice.

At Advanced Dentistry of Edgewater, we understand your smile is important to you. But we also know that functions like eating and speaking are important, too. That’s why we offer many procedures to restore the functionality of your teeth at our Edgewater, NJ cosmetic dental practice, including dental implants.

Dental implants don’t just replace the visible part of the tooth. When you lose a tooth, you lose the root, too. Dental implants are the only replacement for the lost root. These artificial roots bond to your jawbone, supporting dental crowns. While dentures and dental implants may depend on other teeth for support, dental implants support themselves. This gives them maximum function and helps maintain the health of your jawbone. You’ll have secure replacement teeth that look and function like natural teeth. They even feel normal. You won’t get sore gums or irritation. And they’re easy to take care of: just brush, floss, and make regular dental visits. If you do this, then they can last a lifetime.

Benefits of Dental Implants

What makes dental implants the best choice for replacing your lost tooth or teeth? Dental implants have many benefits over other tooth replacement options. Dental implants:

  • Support themselves
  • Look natural
  • Function like natural teeth
  • Stimulate the jawbone and gums
  • Require no special care
  • Have a very high success rate
  • Can last a lifetime
  • Work for almost anyone

Dental implants are the closest thing we have to growing a new tooth. In fact, they’re probably better than growing new teeth. Growing new teeth might take years, but with dental implants, you can get teeth in one day.

Candidates for Dental Implants

When we said that dental implants work for almost anyone, we weren’t joking. There are only three requirements for you to be a candidate for dental implants. You must:

  • Have one or more missing teeth (or teeth that need to be removed)
  • Be healthy enough for surgery
  • Have a fully grown jawbone

Some people may require additional procedures to get ready for dental implants. If you have gum disease, we will treat your gum disease first. Also, if your jawbone doesn’t have enough bone to support implants, we may have to use a bone graft to prepare it. This can sometimes be done at the same time as your implant procedure. Other times, we will perform a separate procedure.

Smoking is bad for dental implants (as it’s bad for your natural teeth). If you want dental implants, it’s best to quit smoking. At a minimum, you have to quit during the healing period. Ideally, you should quit for life.

Dental Implant Procedure

The dental implant procedure can vary widely, depending on your oral health and your needs. Many people can get teeth in one day, especially with All-on-4 ® implant dentures. At Advanced Dentistry of Edgewater, Dr. Wanda Mejia, Dr. George Sepiashvili, or another of our skilled dentists will perform a comprehensive exam. Once we’ve determined whether regular implants, mini implants, and/or implant dentures are best for you, we can plan the timing. Dr. Mejia and Dr. Sepiashvili are both fully skilled in the entire implant process, so we don’t need to refer you to another dentist.

We may start by treating gum disease, grafting bone, or extracting teeth that can’t be saved. Then we will place your implant or implants. If these are stable enough, we may place a provisional crown or bridge on them that day. If they’re not stable enough, we will have to give them time to heal before placing restorations on them. But don’t worry: we still have options that will allow you to have a full smile when you leave our office.

Your implants will heal and grow more stable. When they’re fully healed, we will replace your provisional restoration with a permanent one.

All-on-4® Implant Dentures

In the past, replacing a full arch of teeth with dental implants was time-consuming, difficult, and very expensive. But now we have a better option.

All-on-4® implant dentures are an attractive alternative to traditional dental implants. We can complete this procedure in one day, and you’ll leave the office with beautiful new teeth. You also probably won’t need to have a bone graft, even if you’ve been told in the past that you would. Not only is this procedure easier, faster, and less expensive, the results are highly successful. In clinical trials, 98% of implants were still in place 5-10 years after the procedure. We can let you know if you’re a good candidate for this alternative.
