The Clear Choice
Invisalign ® has rapidly become an immensely popular orthodontic option. That’s because it offers so many great benefits, including:
- Straighten teeth without brackets and wires
- Clear plastic aligners are almost invisible
- Less irritation of teeth, cheeks, and tongue
- Enjoy all your favorite foods–give up nothing
- No need to clean around brackets and wires
- Can be faster than traditional braces
With all these benefits, it’s no wonder that more and more people are looking to straighten their teeth with Invisalign ®.
How Invisalign ® Works
Invisalign ® operates on the same basic principles as other orthodontic treatments. Our bones are able to reshape themselves in response to controlled, constant pressure. Our jawbone is especially dynamic to allow teeth to come in and move into position as old teeth are lost.
The main difference is that, instead of brackets, wires, elastics, and springs, Invisalign uses clear plastic aligners. During your consultation, Dr. Wanda Mejia, Dr. George Sepiashvili, or another of our team of dentists will get the current positions of your teeth using our advanced Trios scanner. Then Invisalign ® will use its advanced algorithm to design an optimal process of tooth movements that will get your teeth into their desired positions as efficiently as possible. That’s why Invisalign can be faster than traditional braces–without stressing your teeth or jaw. Each movement is then translated into a particular aligner–similar to a mouthguard–that you wear over your teeth. It will push gently on your teeth until they achieve the desired position for that stage.
You will start by wearing your aligners for two weeks each, then switch to a new aligner that will achieve the next step in movement. If your teeth are responding properly, we will authorize you to wear each aligner for just one week each, cutting your treatment time in half! This isn’t just convenient, it’s better for your teeth. The less time you spend in orthodontic treatment, the lower the risk of decay or gum disease.
Treatment Time and Post Care
In the past, Invisalign ® was comparable to standard braces for the types of cases it could treat. But now advanced algorithm updates by Align Technology, improved materials, and innovative movement technologies mean that the treatment can actually be shorter with Invisalign ® in many cases. And it also means that more people are eligible for Invisalign ® than ever before.
As with other orthodontic treatments, you will have to wear a retainer after treatment with Invisalign ®. However, you can usually just start by wearing your retainer at night. After a while, you can cut down to wearing it less often, but periodic wear can help you maintain your results for life.
